Commissioning a Horse Portrait

Your Horse Photos
If you are taking photos specifically for a horse portrait and you would like the portrait to be depicted without the tack, please try to take the photos without any tack or head collar on. It is very difficult to remove head collars or tack when painting, I like to get as close a representation of your horse as I possibly can and if the bit is changing the shape of the mouth, for instance, it would be very difficult to make up how it would look without it. Every horse is different, your horse is unique and so i need to make sure i paint your horse and not just any horse. Its often best to take as many photos as you can in an open field or a stable yard so that you are outside in the open air and this way you wont need to use flash.

Horse photos can be emailed in as high resolution as you have them, or you can send them to us on cd. If you have non digital pet photos you can either scan them or send us copies of them, please contact us for our studio address.

The Horse Composite
Once I have received your photos we will create you a composite on the computer as a kind of preliminary visual so that you can see how your portrait could look. This allows us to make sure that you are getting exact what you want form the portrait. Often we can remove backgrounds, put the horse into a difference scene, add two horses into the same scene and by creating a series of composite we can be sure to get everything right before I put pencil to paper or brush to canvas.

traditional cat portraits
The example below shows a horse oil portrait I completed in 2010. The first three photos were the clients original photos. i then cut them out form their backgrounds and place them together in the computer. Once the client was happy with the size differences between the horses and their placement I painted the portrait in oils on canvas traditionally to the size of 30 x 20 inches.
